News Title Swiches..Time to upgrade?
Posted By Clayton hargrave

The last switch I purchased was a Cisco 2424 seris. A beautiful 24 port 10/100 switch with a lot of flexibility for the time. Actually it was way more than I needed.

Now we are in the world of Gigabit wireless so it's probably time to upgrade our gigabit wire connections. I say it's time because they seem to be dirt cheap.

For home users that need a minimum of highspeed Gigabit ports Netgear makes a nice little unit with 5 ports that has a street price of 55 dollars. For those of us who have many server colocated the NETGEAR JGS524 24-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch at $269 dollars is a steal. These switches will switch at line speed but lack the layer management higher end customers might need.

For example if you need 24 ports, 8 uplinks the Cisco ME 6524 24 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch at almost 12 is your baby. the next step from Ciscos Catallyst family this unit does it all. It literally has to much to list but it will do what you expect a high end Cisco switch to do and if my switch is any indication Cisco, when they go high end they pull out all the stops.

So depending on your needs weather 1 port of 128 multiple stacackable units it's time. It's time price wise wile most switchmakers are losing the home market to wireless built in switches. High end customers just might be able to upgrade the wire closet to something that glows with the ultimate switching power. With the Internets ability to price for you your almost assured a great buy. Although now has come and gone get that Gigabit switch you couldn't afford 5 years ago but are now dimestore items begging for a customer.
